The application process doesn't have to be overwhelming.
Embarking on the journey to Italian citizenship is exciting, but the application process can seem daunting. With careful planning and expert guidance, ICC can help make your case for Italian citizenship a success.
Here's a step-by-step breakdown of the general Italian citizenship by descent application process:
1. Verify Eligibility
The first step is to ensure your Italian line of descent meets the requirements to prove eligibility. Take a look at our eligibility flowchart to determine if you qualify. This step usually requires locating your last Italian born ancestor’s naturalization records.
2. Gather Required Documents
The second step is to gather all the necessary documents for your citizenship application. This typically includes:
Naturalization records: either from USCIS, NARA, or the local court where your ancestor naturalized.
Birth Certificates: Certificates for yourself and everyone in your line all the way back to your last Italian born ancestor.
Marriage Certificates: depending on where you plan to apply, the documents you need may vary, you will always need all of the in-line marriage certificates; or auxiliary documents proving paternity in cases where you or your ancestors were unwed.
Death Certificates: If applicable, certificates for deceased ancestors; death certificates are not usually required for 1948 cases or Against the Queue, but they can be useful as supporting documentation for name inconsistencies.
Residency Permits: If you're applying in Italy, stamp of arrival in Italy on your passport, proof of your residency (registered lease), and permesso di soggiorno.
Language Proficiency Certificates: If applying for JM, certificates demonstrating a proficiency of B1 level Italian language skills and background checks.
Certification and Apostille: All non-Italian documents will need to be Apostilled for international use. Check the Department of State website for the state where your documents were issued for appropriate instructions on how to have them Apostilled. For Naturalization documents and Federal documents (such as background checks) the U.S. Department of State is responsible for the Apostille.
Translations: Italian translations of all non-Italian documents; be aware that different applications require different standards for translations.

3. Submit the Application
Once you've gathered the necessary documents, you'll need to submit your application to the appropriate Italian consulate, court, or comune. You will need to schedule an appointment, or a court date, to discuss your case and provide additional information. In 1948 and AtQ cases, your Italian attorney will do this for you in court.
4. Legal Verification
The Italian authorities will verify the authenticity of your documents. This process can take some time, so patience is key. They will also conduct a “Non Rinuncia” check to ensure that neither you nor any of your ancestors have ever formally renounced Italian citizenship to Italian officials.
5. Issuance of Citizenship Certificate
Once you've completed all the necessary steps, you'll receive a formal recognition of your Italian citizenship. Then your documents will be transcribed into the Italian records. Once this step is complete you can request a copy of your Italian birth certificate in order to apply for your little red passport!
