Visa Categories for Long-Term Residency

Elective Residence Visa


Designed for individuals who wish to reside in Italy without engaging in employment, the Elective Residence Visa is an attractive option for retirees and those with substantial passive income.


Eligibility: Applicants must demonstrate a consistent and reliable source of income, typically exceeding €31,000 per year, derived from pensions, investments, or other non-employment sources. This income must be stable, with continuity reasonably assured for the foreseeable future.


Comprehensive health insurance coverage is also mandatory. In addition, applicants must provide proof of suitable accommodation in Italy, such as a rental agreement or property ownership documents. This ensures they have a place to live upon arrival.


Benefits: This visa allows for long-term residency in Italy, with the possibility of renewal and eventual eligibility for permanent residency.

Restrictions: Holders of this visa are not permitted to work in Italy.


Investor Visa (Golden Visa)


The Investor Visa program provides a pathway to Italian residency for individuals who make significant financial contributions to the Italian economy.


Investment Options: Qualifying investments include:

At least €2,000,000 in Italian government bonds (held for a minimum of 2 years)


A minimum of €500,000 in shares of an existing Italian company (or €250,000 for an innovative start-up), held for at least 2 years.

A philanthropic donation of at least €1,000,000 to a project of public interest in Italy.


Benefits: The Investor Visa offers a fast-track to residency, with minimal residency requirements and potential for family members to be included in the application.


Self-Employment Visa


For those aspiring to establish a freelance career or launch a business venture in Italy, the Self-Employment Visa provides the necessary authorization.


Eligibility: Applicants must demonstrate their qualifications and experience in their chosen field, present a viable business plan, and meet specific financial requirements.


Italy allows entry for self-employment for the following categories:


  • Entrepreneurs implementing an investment plan with their own resources (not less than €500,000) and creating at least 3 new jobs.


  • Freelancers in regulated, supervised, or nationally represented professions.


  • Holders of corporate administration and control offices.


  • Artists of established reputation hired by public or private entities.


  • Foreign nationals establishing “innovative start-up” enterprises.


Quota System: Italy operates a quota system for self-employment visas, with a limit of 500 visas issued annually.

Digital Nomad Visa
